About Us: The C.R.I.P. (Combined Reconnaissance Intelligence Platoon) was formed in the early spring of 1967, (March or April). The platoon was made up of approximately 25 soldiers of the Army of the Republic of Viet Nam (ARVN) (S-2 platoon) and 25 American soldiers. They were stationed at the base camp in Cu Chi with the 25th Infantry Div.; 2nd Bn. 27th. Inf. Regiment (Wolfhounds) however they lived and worked out of the town of Bao Trai, in the province of Hau Nghia. On February 11, 1968, a helicopter spotted several Viet Cong in an open area around Bao Trai. A group of about 18 to 20 Americans of CRIP and 1 Vietnamese soldier of the S-2 platoon, (unconfirmed), were sent into the field to locate these Viet Cong and they walked into an ambush. Ten of the American soldiers were killed (The Mighty Ten), and several others were wounded. In 2004 Gene Underhill located Leonard “Doc” Brooks and since then the platoon members have worked diligently to locate surviving members of the Platoon. At the present time approx.28 of the estimated 70-75 men who served in the platoon in the approximately 9 months of the platoon’s existence have been located.
